THIS TIME NEXT YEAR Blog Hop
Behind the Scenes
When I first decided to write This Time Next Year for Decadent Publishing’s 1Night Stand line, I thought, “Yeah, I can do that.” It seemed simple. Bring two people together, drive in a wedge, reconcile for happily ever after.
What I really loved about the line is that it’sdifferent. The concept is the same, but the variety of stories is so vast that you’ll never read the same thing twice—ever. There are a ton of talented people who write for it, so the idea of doing the same was a bit daunting. After all, how do you match that caliber of talent?
I dug in without a clear plan because I’m a pantser and that’s how we roll. As I started writing, I visualized this broken woman who’d let fear dictate her entire life, and when I discovered the reason for the fear, I was ready to roll with a beautiful romancebetween this broken woman and the vampire who encapsulated the event that set all of this into motion.
So…there was my wedge, which set the tone for the rest of the story.
The next issue? How on earth to resolve this in one night? After all, that’s the premise of the entire line—love in one night. A lot of understanding and talking, of course. Oh, and lots of great sex. That always helps, too.
I got all that accomplished. But the hardest part (even to Chuck on Supernatural, and he was God) is the ending. At first, I went from fear/hate to love/transformation in said one night, but my lovely alpha reader and plot wrangler Ava Doran told me that it just didn’t work. She was right. So I kept reading—I have an addiction to 1NS stories and I’m totally fine with that—and discovered that there were a few stories that utilized epilogues. Huzzah! Crisis averted!
To date, I can say that I’m probably the most proud of this story, not because it’s my first solo release, but because of the amount of heart and emotion contained in just a few pages.
And since endings are hard…yeah….
Vampire Kiernan Shaw has never forgotten the night twenty years ago when he’d been forced to stand by while another vampire killed a six-year-old girl’s parents in front of her. He’s spent the better part of the last two decades watching over her, protecting her and hoping for an opportunity to make amends one day.
Ever since surviving the vampire attack that killed her parents, Moira Curran has dealt with the resulting nightmares and abandonment issues the only way she could—by throwing herself into her biochemistry career, preferring a life of a hermit in her lab to facing the reality of her lonely life.
Madame Eve brings them back together for one fateful night. An immediate bond of sizzling chemistry and respect forms, but can it heal her fears and his guilt?
